3/21/1976	The Indian people have delivered a stinging rebuke to the woman who had ruled them without the benefit of a constitution for the past 19 months by dumping her from office in a landslide election. After 11 years of rule, Indira Gandhi has resigned, and in an uncharacteristically humble statement said she ""accepted the verdict unreservedly"" and promised ""constructive cooperation"" with the new government. The heads of the victorious parties immediately dropped the year-and-a-half-old state of emergency, freed political prisoners, and began negotiations over who would head the new government.

1/18/1950	India is declared a secular republic. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1947-1964) is determined to abolish casteism and industrialize the nation. Constitution makes Hindi official national language, English to continue for 15 years, 14 major state languages are recognized. India also moved a motion for no war treaty between India and Pakistan to improve the relations with neighboring countries.

8/10/1927	Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu, first Indian astronomer, litterateur and Urdu poet, was born at Madras.
8/10/1927	Surdas (1483-1563), blind Hindi bard and singer of Agra whose hymns to Krishna are compiled in the 'Sursagar', was born in Sihi village near Delhi.
12/30/1906	The All India Muslim League was founded in Dacca by a group of big landlords which included Aga Khan III, The Nawab of Dacca and Nawab Mohsin-ul-Mulk-Salimullah. They supported the Partition of Bengal and called for seperate Muslim electrorates and other safeguard for Muslims.
7/15/1948	Establishment of 'PEPS' (Patiyala and East Punjab States Union).
1/22/1906	Judge Jayantilal Chhotalal Shah, chief Justice and Supreme Court of India, was born.
2/16/1994	Nivrittibuwa Sarnaik, veteran singer of 'Jaipur Gharana', passed away.
