9/9/1941Syed Abid Ali, great Indian medium pace-bowler and all-rounder, was born at Hyderabad.
9/9/1941Queen Elizabeth I granted its Royal Charter to the 218 Knights and merchants of the City of London who formed the East India Company. The venture failed to achieve its stated objectives -- it made little impression on the Dutch control of the spice trade and could not establish a lasting outpost in the East Indies.
4/27/1748Muhammad Shah, Mughal emperor, passed away and was succeeded by his son Ahmad Shah.
5/18/1912Narayan Govind Chitre, with the help of R. P. Tipnis and Cameraman Johnson, produced a 8000 ft. long theatrical film 'Pundalik', which was directed by Ramchandra Torney alias Dada Saheb Torne. The entire film was shot in a theatre at Mangaldas Wadi in Bombay, where the Sangit Mandali, a professional theatre group, was performing a play 'Pundalik'. The film was released on May, 18 in the Coronation Cinematograph at Girgaum, Bombay.

12/31/1929At the Lahore session, under the Presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress adopted a resolution of 'Poorna Swaraj' (Complete Independence), the slogan given by Gandhiji. The tricolour flag of freedom was unfurled and 26th January 1930 was decided to be celebrated as Independence day every year. This session led to Civil Disobedience Movement, Dandi March to break the Salt Law, etc.
