12/31/1995Air Chief Marshal Satish Kumar Sareen PVSM, AVSM, VM, ADC., became the Air Officer Commanding, Indian Air Force. He was in this office till 31/Dec/1998.
5/31/1970Indira Gandhi called for international help as the civil war in Bangladesh, or East Pakistan, had turned two million people into refugees. Many of them were suffering from cholera and smallpox. The authorities of West Pakistan refused to care for them, and India couldn't afford to.
5/31/1970Mughal Emperor Akbar was proclaimed as successor of Humayun at the age of tewelve years at Kalanur, Gurudaspur district, Punjab. Akbar (1542-1605), grandson of Babur, became third Mughal Emperor at the age of 13 years. He de-established Islam as state religion and declared himself impartial ruler of Hindus and Muslims. He also encouraged Art, Culture and Religious Tolerance.
