Kashmir, after initial dithering, acceded to India voluntarily and by popular consent, then, was invaded by Pakistani tribesmen with the support of the Pakistani government.
5/18/1966Panchanan Maheshwari, great Indian scientist of botany, passed away. He studied the morphology, anatomy and embryology of some angiosperms, the class of plants which produce flowers. He discovered species of plants like ""Panchanania Jaipuriensis and Isoeted Panchananil."" He wrote two authoritative books, 'An Introduction to the Embryology of Angiosperms' & 'Recent Advances in Embryology on Angiosperms'. In 1951, he founded the International Society of plant Morphologists.
9/27/1993Daily newspaper of Marathi Language ""Samna"" started its publication at Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad).
10/24/1856Veer Narayan Singh, freedom fighter, was arrested by the British Government at Sambalpur for distributing grains from the warehouse to the people. He was sent to jail at Raipur.
6/22/1975National Emergency was declared and censorship introduced.
4/14/1944Blast in ammunition loaded on 1,318 tonned freighter 'S. S. Fort Stikine' which was anchored in Victoria Dock at Bombay. The explosion killed 1376 people, wrecking 27 ships and destroying 40,000 tons of food.
