Historical Event on 1/18/1950
India is declared a secular republic. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1947-1964) is determined to abolish casteism and industrialize the nation. Constitution makes Hindi official national language, English to continue for 15 years, 14 major state languages are recognized. India also moved a motion for no war treaty between India and Pakistan to improve the relations with neighboring countries.

8/17/1947	The first British troop leaves for England after Indian independence.
12/1/2000	An armed intruder snipes at naval commando Satvir Singh at the official residence of the Navy Chief Admiral Sushil Kumar in the high- security Rajaji Marg area in New Delhi. The Navy sets up an enquiry board to probe the incident.
8/12/1992	72 militants surrendered before Punjab CM Beant Singh.
10/1/1993	Two more Election Commissioners appointed.
4/18/1859	Tatya Tope (his original name was Ramchandra Raghunath Tope) a leader of Sepoy Mutiny, was captured in April, courtmarshalled and hanged at Sivpuri for 1857 Indian Mutiny.
4/5/1938	Anil Rakeshi, great poet, Hindi writer and critic, was born at Nahan (H.P.).
4/5/1938	Acharya Surdasji, famous poet in Hindi and great devotee of Lord Krishna, was born.
4/27/1994	Supreme Court strikes down section 309 of the Indian Penal Code(which makes suicide a punishable offence)- violative of Article 21.
4/10/1875	Swami Dayanand Saraswati established the Arya Samaj at Bombay and in 1877 in Lahore.
11/20/1917	J.C. Bose Research Institute was established in Calcutta.
