Historical Event on 1/15/1966

The Indian Air Force achieved equal status with the Army and possessed in excess of 70,000 personnel and was nearing its 45-squadron goal. Its composition in the autumn of 1968 included 23 fighter category squadrons, three tactical bomber squadrons, a maritime patrol squadron (with ex-Air India L. 1049G Super Constellations), 11 transport squadrons, four AOP squadrons, a number of helicopter units and a few SAM squadrons.

1/15/1966Alauddin Khilji captured Chittorhgarh after defeating Rana Bhim Singh. Before the capture, Padmini, the beautiful queen along with several hundred females, had sacrificed herself in fire (Jouhar Pratha). This whole battle was fought due to Padmini.
8/9/1892Shri Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, prolific author and first librarian of the University of Madras, was born.
4/27/1906China, as suzerain of Tibet, has agreed to the terms of a treaty proposed by Britain. According to the treaty, foreign powers may not send representatives to Tibet, receive transportation or mining concessions, or occupy, buy or lease any territory in Tibet without British permission. The British want to prevent the Russians from establishing a protectorate over Tibet, which lies on India's northern border. Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, failed in attempts to communicate with Tibet's ruler, the Dalai Lama. A British military expedition fought its way to the capital at Lhasa and concluded the agreement.

1/31/1976Air Chief Marshal Om Prakash Mehra, PVSM, retired as the Air Officer Commanding, India Command.
3/17/1999An international seminar on UN Peacekeeping was co-jointly hosted by Ministry of External affairs and Ministry of Defence at New Delhi from 17 to 19 March 1999. The seminar was conducted by HQ Army Training Command, Shimla on behalf of the Indian Army. A total of 126 foreign delegates from 71 countries participated in the seminar.
